Lights were flashing, Luci was screaming. If she could have gotten near Sying, she would have killed her.
Lorena soothed her, “Luci, stop, only she knows where Alice is. We can’t hurt her. We need her alive.”
“What have you done with my baby?” Lorena strained to hold Luci back.
Zach and Luke took the pilot aside.
“Life or death, it’s your choice buddy.”
The pilot shook. He tried to speak, but the words wouldn’t come.
“Take it easy. Tell us what you know, and we will let you go.”
“There was a child on the plane. Mme said she was sick. She slept most of the way. And when we landed, someone was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He took her immediately and drove off. I believe they boarded another jet.”
“Connect me with Air Traffic Control immediately!” Luke spoke into his iPhone.
“Yes, you have a private plane on the Tarmac about to leave?”
“Flight plan the Middle East?”
“Stop that plane!”
“Too late Sir. They are moving.”
Luke remained cool. He engaged a second secure channel he had on hold. “Would you repeat the message to the ATC, sir.”
“It’s never too late! Stop that plane! On orders of the President of France!”
The air traffic controller recognized the voice.
“Of course, sir, right away M. President.”
“But do not, repeat, do not damage the plane or its inhabitants.” Pres. Macron demanded.
Luke raced over to Luci.
“Luci, Lorena, we’ll take this van and head to runway 3. See the plane out there?” It was still moving for takeoff.
“Yes!” Luci cried.
Suddenly an RPG shot from a French Special Forces team. SDAT blew a crater ten meters in front of the plane. Trucks were moving towards the aircraft from all angles. The pilot wisely chose to power down.
“Let’s go get Alice!”
By the time they reached the plane, it was surrounded by the French SDAT. The doors opened, and three men came down the steps, hands raised.
“Who else is on the plane?” Luke yelled.
“No one sir, no one.”
“What about the child?”
The men said nothing.
Luci was already ascending the steps two at a time, AK-47 raised.
“Alice!!!!”
Luke was right behind her.
A tiny voice responded.
“Mommy, mommy.” Luci grabbed little Alice into her arms.
“Never again Alice. I won’t leave you ever again!”
“Okay mommy don’t cry mommy. Alice is okay. Dolly?”
Luci laughed through her tears. “Yes, Dolly is okay. Lorena has your Dolly.”
“Lena Mommy?”
Lorena appeared in the doorway, tears overcoming her ability to talk.
“Oh my God, you’re okay. I’m so sorry Alice.”
“Kithy Lena?”
“Yes baby, Lorena has Dolly and your Kitty Bag.” Luci took Lorena’s knapsack and removed Dolly. She gently probed parts of the doll making sure everything was secure.
She glanced at Raven, and at that moment, he realized where she had stashed millions of dollars-worth of diamonds.
“Let’s go home.”

“LUKE, I HAVE something I need to tell you.”
“Sure Samaar, out with it.”
“I’m taking this plane, my baby girl and the pilot. I’m out.”
Luke should have expected this, but he wasn’t prepared.
He’d waited a lifetime to love again, and now Samaar was removing herself from his life. But he understood how powerful a parent’s love could be. And how frightened she must be for her daughter.
“I wish you luck Samaar. You will both always be in my heart. If you ever need me, I will be here.”
He wanted to take her in his arms and beg her to stay. To tell her that he could keep them safe from harm. But it was no use. When Luci made up her mind, she was unstoppable. All he could do was hope for the future. And wish her the best.
Alice looked up at Zach and Lorena. Confusion marred her baby face.
“Lena too mommy?’
“No baby, Lorena has to stay and help Zach.”
Alice looked up at Lorena, tears in her wise eyes. Lorena felt her heart ripped from her chest. But she knew Alice was never hers to keep.
Luke, Zach, and Lorena watched the plane take off.
In a rare display of emotion, Zach put his arm around Raven and Lorena.
“She’ll be back. You wait and see.”
“She will be back.”
